The 1977 Club is over, and what a success! So many of you took part – thank you! – and it was fascinating seeing what books you’d discovered, read and discussed. I know some were hoping the next club would move on to the 1980s, but I think that was a bit of a bridge too far for Simon and myself. So when we discussed the options for choosing the next date, we did consider going back to the 1920s again, then Simon came up with the clever idea of going for a random year. I liked that a lot too, and so Simon did all the hard with random.org (as well as designing the logo) and the result was – 1944!
As Simon mentions in his post, this is the first time we’ve chosen a wartime year, so there could be a number of interesting works to read here. You have six months to plan, and we hope as many of you as possible of you will join in. There’s plenty of preparation time – so let’s get searching the stacks! 🙂

even with all that preparation time I bet I’ll be making the decision at the last moment, Any recommendations for sites to look at that have a comprehensive listing of the books published that year? I used Wikipedia for 1977 but it was far from complete.

LOL! Yes, I always end up running out of time. I’ve never yet found a reliable list, so I use a combination of Goodreads, Wikipedia and what I have on my shelves and checking my favourite authors! Google comes up with a list too!

Oh I’m SO glad you have gone backwards. I wasn’t looking forward to the 80s. I rather prefer eras before my own, and am happier paddling around in the first half of the twentieth. Am very pleased you are staying that side of the bridge. Will see if I can be drawn to a shorter book than the 700 page 70s chunkster I couldn’t finish and lost my enthusiasm for!

Apr 25, 2018 @ 20:45:46
Agreed – paddling in certain parts of the 20th century are so pleasant! A 700 page chunkster was ambitious – which one was it, since you’re not likely to blog about it?

Apr 26, 2018 @ 21:18:17
Daniel Martin. Now I love John Fowler earlier books, and also enjoyed The Maggot, which I think came after this one. But this, for me, is a novel of ideas but not making its way quite out of the philosophical/cerebral for me

I was all for pushing on into the ’80s and…gasp…beyond. 🙂 But a random year is good. I think I’m going to find it a bit more difficult finding anything really obscure, but I’ll try!

SO glad ! you’re going backwards in time again and isn’t random.org just so much fun. I’ll check my shelves. I still have my set of pink penguins and that might throw up something. Might look to some American books written in the 80’s. I’m definitely in. Though I am overseas the last week of Nov for 15 days so hope the date is before that. Looking forward to it. Going to check my Library Thing now!

The club is in October (the dates are on the graphic, I think) so you should be fine! Yes, we’re definitely better off in the 1940s as opposed to the 1980s I think! 🙂

Do you read one book or as many as you can from the given year?
kaggsysbookishramblings
May 04, 2018 @ 09:43:22
It depends on each individual reader, really. Some only read one book, others a couple – I tend to try and fit in as many as I can manage, and I do always intend to do a post a day even if each post isn’t a review. But if you only want to read one or only have time for one, that’s absolutely fine too! 🙂
