Well, what a wonderful week of reading we’ve all had with the #1951Club! These reading events (so cleverly devised by Simon) seem to go from strength to strength, and I can’t get over how many titles keep popping up that I wasn’t aware were from the year in question!
I started the week with plans and possibilities and of course went off on several tangents, but I’ve read some really wonderful books. Alas, I didn’t get to all of the ones I wanted, and some of the longer ones and re-reads went by the by. However, there were some fabulous crime reads, as well as some humour from Queneau, some serious stuff from Serge and some darker material from Durrenmatt. So another enjoyable club read!
Simon suggested that we should cast around for suggestions for the next reading week, and we will be looking to pick a year in the 1960s. So if you have any suggestions of a particularly good year, do comment here or on Simon’s blog so we can see what people are keen on and pick a year with some great reads!
I’ll continue to link to posts people point me at on my 1951 Club page here, so please comment and let me know if you’ve posted and I haven’t seen it! Thanks to all for joining in, and here’s to the next club! 🙂

I’d like to propose 1969 – the year I was born. 🙂

I’d vote for 1968 or 1969. A time when society, in the UK, Europe and USA in particular, was in such a state of change.

Yes, both interesting years – there could be quite a variety of titles available!

Loved taking part in this one. I read an Agatha C for the last club but was travelling, so did not put a review. I am glad I read atleast one for the 1951 club. I vote for 1967. Reason – Selfish choice because I have a few books in that year that I really want to read and Garcia’s 100 years of solitude, which I want to re-read.:D
Interestingly I just found this website that lists books by year – https://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~immer/books1960s . It lists only the famous ones but not the lesser known novels. But I think its handy when readers want to pick a well-known book. Perhaps you are already aware of the website, just thought I would share.

You can vote for whichever year you want! I must admit I’m feeling slightly drawn to 1969 but we shall see! And thank you for the link to the website – I wasn’t aware of this and it will be very useful!

It’s been such a great reading week. So many people joining in and such a variety of books to pick from. I read three fantastic books, and have seen loads of amazing reviews. I hope there will be more of these club reads to come.

It’s been great, hasn’t it? I really enjoy these weeks (although they’re a bit exhausting!!) The 1960s next – but which year?

Thanks for hosting this again. It’s been good to see so many people taking part this week. I’m drawn to 1968 for the next club as there are quite a few books I’d like to read from that year, but I’m sure whichever one you choose it will be another success!

Congrats on another very successful week – the diversity of books published in your chosen years never ceases to amaze me. I’m looking forward to the next one already, especially if it’s going to focus on a year in the 1960s. I don’t have a particular preference as yet – I’m sure it’ll be great whichever one you choose.

Thank you! 1951 was certainly a rich and varied year and there were some great books. I think the 1960s will be interesting too!

I didnt read as much as I planned – I could not find my copy of Elizabeth Taylor anywhere in the house. Someone has moved it! But I loved seeing what other people read

It’s a good thing I started reading Steinbeck the week before the event. I don’t think I would have managed to finish and write about it had I not done so.
Thank you both for hosting!
1969 is an excellent year – so many great titles. 1968 is also very good, 1963 is interesting…
I am sure it would be fun to explore whichever year you end up choosing.

Thank you Karen, I do enjoy your ‘years’. I’ll plant my flag in 1962, please, as that was the publication date of a book by an author I hugely admired (and began reading much later) I think, as the first book I ever read by this person, it was probably the most influential on me. The author wrote, often, much in advance of their times. A purpose to do a long overdue re-read would be welcome!

Oooh, I’m intrigued – thanks for your vote, and I wonder which author you can be thinking of…

Apr 17, 2017 @ 18:49:02
Well, if that year wins, you will find out…Or it may be I have to do a re-read and a review. It’s a book I read twice, but long before I ever started reviewing. Perhaps a look at 1962 books might make it obvious, anyway. A good decade, anyway. Though possibly any decade could be so described, when we are far enough away from it

What a great event it has been! It will take me a little while to get through all the reviews that were posted. I’m looking forward to the next Club. Searching for a book from a particular year is almost as much fun as reading it.

I got about 30% through the Caine Mutiny (up to the point where Queeg is introduced) and hit the wall. I couldnt get Bogart from the film out of my head. One day i will return and finish it though, it was a good fast read. Also flirted a bit with From Here to Eternity, reading the chapters about Prew and Lorene/Alma. I will go back there too eventually, it is a big book! I will start looking around for my 1968 read, now that was a year that was! I was 12, and the world of my childhood was exploding around me. What to do, where to go, all roads were open and so many choices.

Sometimes the reading just doesn’t go your way! But 1968 has plenty of gems by the look of it – maybe choose something slim? 😉
