Today sees the start of roofbeamreader’s Beats of Summer reading event and I’m really pleased to be taking part. As I’ve said in the past, I came of age reading the Beats in my late teens living in smalltown England and their books have a special place in my heart.
At present, I definitely plan to read “Wake Up” and “The Sea is My Brother”, both Kerouac titles which are new to me. After that, I’m not sure – I re-read the whole of Richard Brautigan’s oeuvre a couple of summer’s back, and loved the lot all over again, but I wonder if it is too soon to go back to his work? We shall see – watch this space!

I’ve never read any Richard Brautigan, actually, so I might try to sneak one in sometime in the next 6 weeks. I had planned for 3 or 4 books, but maybe I can squeeze in another or make a substitute (I’ve read a lot of Burroughs already, for instance, so I don’t necessarily need to read another during this event).

Oh, Brautigan is wonderful! One of my favourite authors, and completely unique in my view. His books are slim too, so I’m sure you can fit one in!

The books you chose sound interesting. I’ll (shamefully) admit I haven’t read anything from the Beats except parts of Howl, so I’m looking forward to this event. Enjoy the event, and happy reading!
