Lizzy and I both teased in our plans for 2023, so you had an inkling it was on its way… and here it is!
Reading Independent Publishers Month started during lockdown to support our favourite indies during difficult times. Moving from the pandemic to the cost of living crisis, trading conditions have probably worsened, so let’s continue to support our independents by highlighting the fantastic books they publish throughout the month of February.
There are only two rules:
- Reading material (whichever format, whichever language) must come from publishers who are currently operating as independents.
- Self-published titles are not eligible for this event.
Need inspiration on what to read? Take a look at the master indices from the previous two events: 2021 2022
Previous support for the event has been amazing. It would be wonderful to create that kind of buzz once more. See you in February?

Hooray! Really looking forward to it. I have some indie novellas lined up so even with my pitiful reading/blogging rate at the moment I should join in 🙂
Jan 05, 2023 @ 16:08:23
Hurrah! Novellas are always good! Look forward to seeing what you read!
Jan 05, 2023 @ 11:05:33
Loads of indies in my TBR so I will be joining in!
Jan 05, 2023 @ 16:07:26
Excellent! 😀 😀
Jan 05, 2023 @ 11:39:51
Hmm, I’ll have to see what I’ve already got waiting on my shelves that fits this category. Wait, what’s that resolution of mine – not to commit to more challenges / events / prompts / memes? What am I like?
Jan 05, 2023 @ 12:20:25
If it doesn’t involve adding more to your TBR, I assume its fine 🙂
Jan 05, 2023 @ 16:04:52
LOL, I always try to read from the TBR and encourage you all to do so too!! 🤣
Jan 05, 2023 @ 16:07:12
We can’t resist these challenges – and we encourage you to read from your TBR, or of not spend a little and support the indies!!
Jan 05, 2023 @ 11:49:43
Hope to join in
Jan 05, 2023 @ 16:06:40
Excellent – look forward to hearing what you choose!
Jan 05, 2023 @ 12:05:47
I absolutely love the idea of reading independent publishers and supporting their work. These are not easy times for any publisher, but they’re especially hard for small indie publishers who don’t have the wide reach or the deep pockets of larger publishers. Often, the indie publishers take chances with authors that other publishers wouldn’t, and it means some excellent books see the light of days.
Jan 05, 2023 @ 16:06:26
Totally agree Margot. There are some brilliant books I’ve read which I would never have seen if indie presses hadn’t take that risk – so I’ve very grateful to them. Which I guess is why Lizzy and I do this – we’re so happy to support them, particularly in these hard times!
Jan 05, 2023 @ 12:19:57
Looking forward to this; I have a couple of titles from Pluto Press, One Fitzcarraldo, and am sure some Pushkins on my review pile; possibly Deep Velum too, by the time.
Jan 05, 2023 @ 16:05:16
Excellent! Lovely to have the push to read books you already own!
Jan 05, 2023 @ 21:25:08
I’m sure I have a couple on the TBR I can join in with.
Jan 06, 2023 @ 14:05:14
Fab! Look forward to seeing what you read!!
Jan 05, 2023 @ 21:51:16
I’ll definitely try to join in. I haven’t looked to see what I have on the TBR yet, but I know there’ll be something!
Jan 06, 2023 @ 14:04:58
Excellent! Look forward to seeing what you read!
Jan 05, 2023 @ 22:16:28
The majority of my reading is from indies but I’ll try to remember to identify my February reads as such!
Jan 06, 2023 @ 14:03:46
Excellent! A lot of mine is too, so it’s an easy reading month in many ways!!
Jan 06, 2023 @ 01:51:15
This is one reading event that I’d be very surprised if my reading doesn’t coincide with this year! But I’ll be sure to highlight the indies read from during that particular month.
Jan 06, 2023 @ 14:02:44
TBH same here – I do read so many indies that it’s really easy and a great pleasure to do this event!
Jan 06, 2023 @ 04:40:17
Yay! So wonderful! Thanks so much for hosting, Kaggsy! Loved participating in the previous editions! Will try to join. My mind is already making a list of to-be-read indie books now 😊
Jan 06, 2023 @ 14:02:21
Excellent – glad you can join in, Vishy! And it’s such fun making lists!
Jan 06, 2023 @ 07:11:35
It seems I’ve already started, reading a couple of Europa Editions novels – will certainly join in I’m sure, the mood often turns towards Indies!
Jan 06, 2023 @ 14:02:01
Hurrah! Yes, I often read indies so it’s no hardship to take part during the month!
Jan 06, 2023 @ 08:51:41
Oh fantastic. So glad this is happening again. I am certain that I have plenty that will fit the bill.
Jan 06, 2023 @ 13:57:36
Excellent – so pleased you can join in, I think it’s such a worthwhile event!!
Jan 06, 2023 @ 11:54:01
I’ll definitely join in with this as it fits with my own reading interests and loose aims for the year. Good to see that you’re running it again!
Jan 06, 2023 @ 13:53:45
Excellent! There’s so much love for indie presses in the bookish community, so I’m glad we can support them. So glad you can join in!
Jan 07, 2023 @ 08:24:17
Jan 08, 2023 @ 11:34:48
So glad you’re doing this again! Your event had led me to read some very interesting things I wouldn’t otherwise have gotten to, although I seldom manage to write anything up. Besides, I’ve lots of things from various independent publishers waiting in the TBR pile, so this gives me a much needed nudge!
Jan 08, 2023 @ 12:54:38
It’s something I think we’re both so happy to do – indie presses have released some of my favourite books and so it’s good to give something back! And like you, I have plenty of indie titles on the TBR!!
Jan 11, 2023 @ 02:53:54
Yay! Can’t wait both for my own reading and to see what others pick.
Jan 11, 2023 @ 08:13:20
There are always so many choices, aren’t there????
Jan 12, 2023 @ 17:46:54
Oh exciting – yes, I’m definitely up for it, though I recall making a massive pile last year and not getting to much of it! I’m sure I’ve got some nice ones to pick from my TBR, though!
Jan 12, 2023 @ 19:37:13
Making the piles is half the fun, but I do hope you can join in with something from the TBR anyway! 😀
Jan 13, 2023 @ 09:50:59
I’ve found three so far – one a Scottish independent! – I can’t remember if university presses are allowed (not OUP, a smaller one)?
Jan 13, 2023 @ 11:27:43
Hurrah! Re university presses I will have to check – I know this has come up in the past and I can’t remember what we decided… 😦
Jan 13, 2023 @ 22:23:35
One of my pledges this year is to join reading events only when I have something suitable in the TBR already. Luckily I do have quite a few Indy titles ….
Jan 14, 2023 @ 12:45:14
Hurrah!! Look forward to seeing what you read!
