In response to queries, which have arisen from various quarters:
- Lizzy and I have too many titles we want to review. So we’re extending until 15.3.2022.
- Use the hashtags #ReadIndies or #ReadIndies2. Contributions using either, and published between 01.02.2022 and 15.03.2022, will be collated into the master event index.
- The definition of an independent publisher? There’s been some confusion particularly around US publishers. Here are two updated lists to consult, if you’re in any doubt that the book you’re reading is published independently. A) American Presses B) Independent Publishers Caucus These are in addition to the lists on the event introduction post.
- Titles should be chosen from the catalogues of current independent publishers.
- Self-published titles are not eligible for this event.
Because we have not explicitly clarified items 4 and 5 before, “rule-bending” posts, already published, will be included in this year’s master index as rule-breakers.
Don’t forget to use the Mr. Linky set up by Lizzy, which you can find here, to leave details of your posts – look forward to hearing what you read! 😀

Oh, great to hear that you’re extending this till mid-March – bravo! Now I don’t have to rush to squeeze my remaining posts into Feb…
Feb 13, 2022 @ 12:58:44
LOL, I was thinking quite early on in the month that I’d need an extension and then Lizzy proposed one so that’s a great relief. I’ll still not get to all the books I want to, but there are certain titles I’m keen to squeeze in!
Feb 13, 2022 @ 12:27:27
Unfortunately, the Medium list of American indies has been taken offline, but here are two alternative lists:
https://www.themilkhouse.org/the-largest-and-always-growing-list-of-independent-book-publishers/
https://nonconformist-mag.com/the-big-big-list-of-indie-publishers-and-small-presses/
Thanks to both you and Lizzy for all your work on this event and for extending it!
Feb 13, 2022 @ 12:57:19
Ah, thanks for this! It’s such a knotty topic so any clarification is most welcome!!
Feb 13, 2022 @ 14:27:34
Hooray for the extension! I’m still going to try and post in February but my blogging is abysmal at the moment… It’s a wonderful event, thanks to you and Lizzy for hosting 🙂
Feb 13, 2022 @ 20:04:35
Most welcome and hope you can take part. But the extension is definitely vital as 28 days just isn’t enough to do justice to all those wonderful indies!!
Feb 13, 2022 @ 18:20:06
Delighted to hear there is an extension. I reviewed a Persephone book (I think they count) last week, but I read it last month. A slow reading month means I have only just started my first proper #ReadIndie of the month, having been sidetracked by other things. I am now reading a lovely Dean Street Press and have a Charco press book on kindle I may read next. 😆
Feb 13, 2022 @ 20:01:12
Excellent! Both good publishers to pick and with the extension you should fit them in ok! 😀
Feb 13, 2022 @ 18:43:25
I’m glad of the extension, thank you! I have been slow on the reading front as have suddenly been bombarded with work, so this will help a lot!
Feb 13, 2022 @ 20:00:30
Oh dear – work is necessary, but does distract from reading! The extension is definitely necessary, though!
Feb 13, 2022 @ 19:04:00
Oh what a relief that we get the extension. I’m so behind on my reviews but do have a Persephone that I want to post this week.
Feb 13, 2022 @ 19:59:41
I’m glad we’ve extended because the four weeks of February never seem to be enough!!
Feb 14, 2022 @ 21:55:08
It’s a short month though so we do have fewer days in which to read them
Feb 15, 2022 @ 09:35:25
True!!!
Feb 13, 2022 @ 19:38:30
I have a ten-year-old title from Atlantic Books (who in fact feature prominently at the bottom of your 2022 logo!) for which I’ve scheduled a a review in a few days. I’ll have to check if it’s still in print now!
Feb 13, 2022 @ 19:59:20
It’s more, I think, whether the publisher is still an indie – if they are then I suspect it doesn’t matter so much if the book is old because you’re still supporting a current indie!
Feb 13, 2022 @ 20:25:15
Mr Penumbra’s 24-hour Bookstore is still listed on Atlantic’s website so it’s definitely “go” for my review!
Feb 13, 2022 @ 20:34:41
Hurrah!!!
Feb 14, 2022 @ 12:28:07
Yay! Wonderful!
Feb 14, 2022 @ 13:43:22
😊
Feb 14, 2022 @ 12:34:55
On another note, I didn’t know that Faber and Faber was an indie publisher! So nice to see them flying high after 93 years!
Feb 14, 2022 @ 13:43:15
Very much so – I do love their books!!
Feb 14, 2022 @ 14:07:45
So wonderful! Must be one of the oldest and biggest indie publishers! Will try to read something from my Faber collection. Maybe something unconventional like a cricket book 😊 Also just discovered that Grove Atlantic is an indie publisher 😊 I got a book by them recently. ReadIndies is just sparkling here these days 😊
Feb 14, 2022 @ 19:35:14
Yes, it’s lovely to know they’re still going and of course some of my favourite poets are from Faber editions. So glad you’re enjoying ReadIndies so much! 😀
Feb 15, 2022 @ 04:32:53
woohoo! thank you for the deadline extension. I am reading a proper #indie now 🙂
Feb 15, 2022 @ 09:34:28
Hurrah! I think the extension was essential, actually! 🤣🤣
Feb 19, 2022 @ 11:27:01
Feb 21, 2022 @ 01:05:00
Agreed on all the enthusiasm for an extension!
And it is a challenge to comprehend the ever-shifting indie concept, but it’s good for us to have to stay on our toes. Heheh
Feb 21, 2022 @ 09:29:58
Indeed – I reckon I could easily do two months!! As for what an indie is, it does seem to be complicated but I try to read as many as possible!
