    Adolphe in particular reminded me of the beginning of the “psychological” approach to novel writing. It brought to mind The Sorrows of Young Werther, but perhaps more closely resembles Lermontov’s A Hero of Our Time. As such it had an impact on many of the later authors of romantic novels in France and elsewhere.

      Having started on Adolphe, it’s certainly very intense and I can see why you made a comparison with the Goethe! 😀
