As I’ve mentioned before on the Ramblings, I am blessed (cursed?) with having a birthday fairly close to Christmas. It means I have to wait all year without celebrations and then two come along at once… Which can be a nuisance; but as my friends and family know me well, it also means there are often a fair amount of bookish incomings at this time of the year. Despite the fact that 2020 has been the year from hell and unlike any other, it’s comforting to find I still have piles of incoming books to share… ;D
First up the birthday pile:
There are some rather fascinating books in the heap, some of which I requested and some of which were inspirational choices by Mr. Kaggsy! From the bottom up, there’s “The Way of the World” by Nicolas Bouvier from Youngest Child; from what I’ve heard this should be a fascinating travel book! Then there’s “Moscow in the Plague Year” by Marina Tsvetaeva courtesy my Little Brother – he thinks the combination of Russia and Poetry and depression is ideal for me! ;D
Next up on the pile is Emile Zola – the first two books in his great cycle of novels. I have kind of conceived a desire to read the whole lot in sequence (gulp!) so requested these from Brother-In-Law. Then we get to Mr. Kaggsy’s choices, and he has done well. I love Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, so a pair of books by and about them promise great things. Mr. K. had a great attack of inspiration when he decided on the “Nineteenth-Century Russian Reader” as I don’t have this, and it’s stuffed full of fascinating stuff, as is “Russian Literature: A Very Short Introduction”. The final book from Mr. K, “The Day They Kidnapped Queen Victoria”, is one I’d never heard of – but it sounds a hoot!
Finally, atop the pile is volume 1 of the Journal of Montaigne’s Travels from my BFF J. (I am expecting remaining volumes to arrive later) – an antique and very pretty edition. Yay! Lovely birthday treats, all – and I’m keen to pick them all up at once, of course!
As for the Christmas arrivals, I sometimes expect to get less in the way of books but this year has seen some lovely books turning up under the tree:
I was a little knocked out by all the arrivals! To look more closely, from the bottom up, first we have books from family:
The bottom three are from Mr. Kaggsy, who managed to once again successfully get me books I want and don’t have – result! The next three are from the Offspring – thank you children! – and the top book is from brother-in-law who is usually good at following instructions re gifts…!
Next up is bookish arrivals from my Virago Secret Santa! As I’ve mentioned in the past, I’m part of the Virago Modern Classics group on LibraryThing, and each year we do a little Secret Santa. This year my gifts were from Alvaret, who I know through her own blog, and she sent me the most wonderful books!
Thoughtfully, she included one book from my wishlist (Nancy Spain), one she thought I would like based on my reading taste (“The Boarding School Girl” – spot on!) and a book she would like me to read (“The Brothers Lionheart” – I’m intrigued!) Such lovely gifts – thank you!
Last but not least, books from friends:
The Ocampo is an impromptu gift from the lovely Jacqui – thank you so much! Perfect! In the middle is volume 2 of the Montaigne mentioned above – hopefully volume 3 will eventually make an appearance… And finally, “The Salt Path” is from my old friend V. – an inspired choice, as I’ve been thinking I should read this one for a loooong time!
So I have been very spoiled bookishly in the last couple of weeks – and once I have shaken this “Underland” book hangover off, I will really have to try to choose what to read next! 😀

I can’t wait till you get to the Zolas. I absolutely loved reading the whole cycle, and it will be really nice to revisit them through your reviews.
Merry Christmas!
Dec 27, 2020 @ 08:05:59
I don’t think I’ve actually ever read any Zola and I’m very excited about the idea of reading through the whole series. It may take me a while though…. 🤣🤣
Dec 27, 2020 @ 08:44:09
You know about our collaborative website? It has both the recommended reading order and the chronological for you to choose from, and lots of other Zola-related content besides…
https://readingzola.wordpress.com/
Dec 27, 2020 @ 16:13:40
I do, and I shall most definitely be checking it out as I read on – in fact, probably fairly soon as I have to decide upon the reading order (always a knotty subject….) 😀
Dec 27, 2020 @ 08:54:42
Oh my gosh, so many books!! That’s wonderful that your friends and family know you well enough to pick such great ones for you! I love Marina Tsvetaeva, looking forward to hearing what you think of that one. The 19th Century Russian Reader sounds great as well.
Dec 27, 2020 @ 16:12:52
I’ve always been happy about how well trained my family is and my friends know me well. So many choices…. ;D
Dec 27, 2020 @ 12:25:16
Wow, what a pile of books. Moscow in the Palgue year, ha, it sounds very you although perhaps rather dark. Many moons ago I enjoyed reading several Zola so I will look forward to your thoughts on those. The Nancy Spain book is good fun. I hope to write my review later to post tomorrow or Tuesday, I am suddenly all behind. A belated happy birthday too.
Dec 27, 2020 @ 16:12:21
Thank you! It’s quite a mountain isn’t it? And yes, I think Moscow is a perfect me book. Looking forward to exploring the Zolas and the Spain – I may skim your thoughts till I’ve read it!
Dec 27, 2020 @ 13:24:03
With your trove of birthday and Christmas books you go into a new year armed with so much to explore! A tick for the multi-celebrations blessings column. Happy belated birthday and holiday reading!
Dec 27, 2020 @ 16:10:51
Thank you! Yes, plenty of choices – one thing I will never be able to say is that I have nothing to read! ;D
Dec 27, 2020 @ 13:46:04
So many wonderful treasures to explore next year — literally something to suit every mood. I’ll be interested to read your thoughts on Zola — like you, I haven’t read any of his work, although I have the first volume or two of that massive set. Twelve Who Ruled also looks quite interesting; I may check it out as I became a little overwhelmed when I read Mantel’s Place of Greater Safety several years back and this would be great background. I’m definitely putting the Ocampo on my list . . . so you see, your bad influence on my TBR mountain continues (I should name one of the peaks “Mt. Kaggsy”!)
Dec 27, 2020 @ 16:10:21
I guess the variety in the piles reflects my grasshopper mind! There are some fascinating books in there and I’m most keen to explore Zola – now I just have to decide on the best reading order…. ;D And I would be honoured if one of your TBR peaks was named after me!!! :DD
Dec 27, 2020 @ 13:56:10
What a lovely selection of books, and I’m glad my own contribution seems to have hit the spot – I shall be very interested to see what you think as it’s an Ocampo I’ve yet to read myself. The Nancy Spain seems to be popping up quite a bit over Christmas – pretty much ideal for the season, I suspect. Happy reading!
Dec 27, 2020 @ 16:09:04
I certainly have been spoiled, and the Ocampo was an inspired choice – thank you! I’ve read one Nancy Spain and I loved it, so I have high hopes for this one! 😀
Dec 27, 2020 @ 15:58:41
What a wonderful pile of books! Happy Birthday x
Dec 27, 2020 @ 16:08:19
Thank you! I’ve been very spoiled this year!!
Dec 27, 2020 @ 16:36:07
I’m guessing those piles will keep you going a few days, maybe a couple of weeks?! I say I’m guessing, going on the prolific rate of your review posts, but still — some of those look quite hefty. 🙂
Apropos the proximity of your birthday to Christmas, have you thought of having an ‘official’ birthday like Her Maj? Two options:
1. You could make it six months to the day henceforth (this would mean you could expect another pile of books near the end of June, just when you were running out of Christmas gifts); or
2. you could choose the feast day allotted to St Catherine, 25th November, said saint being as you know the origin of the name Karen, adopted into English from the Danish. Admittedly this is only a month before Christmas, but it may be long enough for people to forget and still give you Christmas books!
Another option would be to have two ‘official’ birthdays, in June and November, and leave your December birthday for gifts from relatives, who would also feel obliged to give you Christmas pressies. Just think, three birthdays instead of just the one! Win-win, even win-win-win!
Dec 27, 2020 @ 17:26:14
Errrmmm – bearing in mind what’s already on the TBR, I’m not going to run out of books soon. Well stocked for the next zombie apocalypse….
As for birthdays, I must admit I like the idea of the two official birthdays in June and November, with December for family… My brother actually has a June birthday, of which I was always jealous, but attaching myself to St. Catherine is an extra plan – I like it! Off to do some scheming…. ;D
Dec 27, 2020 @ 18:08:58
Hooray, I’ve been hoping you’d bite the bullet with Zola for some time. I’m a long way off finishing the cycle but am enjoying it so much. I’m glad I didn’t read the first in the series as my first experience with Zola – its important because it sets the foundation for what follows and explains the two key families but isn’t the most entertaining/mind blowing. My first novel was Germinal
Dec 27, 2020 @ 19:18:02
Yes, I’m wondering about that too. I keep seeing comments that it’s best to read one of the big hitters first. We shall see!
Dec 27, 2020 @ 18:14:17
Happy Birthday! What a delicious looking pile! I bet you can’t wait to devour them all. I look forward to your blog posts on the various books.
Dec 27, 2020 @ 19:17:28
Thank you! As usual I would like to be reading them all at once, but I can’t see that happening somehow…. ;D
Dec 27, 2020 @ 19:04:38
I received The Salt Path, too! And happy birthday. Mine is in January so I get to save up my book tokens until I know what’s arrived then. Mr Liz gives me some money on a spreadsheet I can use to claim gifts all year round, which removes that all-the-fun-in-one-month thing quite nicely!
Dec 27, 2020 @ 19:16:20
Thank you! And that sounds like a good plan – if I get birthday money or tokens I save it until after Christmas. And I do like Mr. Liz’s gifts all year round idea – brilliant! 😀
Dec 27, 2020 @ 23:42:02
I have thought all year about reading Zola so will be interested to see what order you pick. I’ll have a look at Lisa’s post too. I jnow many recommend not chronologically but I forget why. Lovely haul. The Russian ones should be good. 🐧⚘
Dec 28, 2020 @ 18:51:52
I was very spoiled I must admit! As for Zola, I am going to have my usual dilemma of published order vs recommended order. I often favour published order, as that’s how the original readers would have experienced the books. We shall see! 😀
Dec 30, 2020 @ 04:33:55
The dilemmas of life!!🐧🎁
Dec 30, 2020 @ 11:00:11
I know! That’s probably the least of my worries right now! 😀
Dec 28, 2020 @ 09:24:51
The Salt Path is a very meaningful “book to give to friends” – that’s where I got my recommendation from, and it was very memorable.
Dec 28, 2020 @ 18:50:48
I’ve heard such good things about it that I’m glad it finally came my way!
Dec 28, 2020 @ 17:39:05
Funny, I have been close to reading another Emile Zola novel recently too. In my case, it’s ‘Ladies Paradise’ which I somehow missed before. If there’s a lull soon, I will read it. 🙂
Dec 28, 2020 @ 18:50:27
I’m keen to get onto Zola – I just feel that there are so many classic authors I haven’t read and that I’m missing such riches!
Dec 28, 2020 @ 19:59:23
Very envious of your family’s book-giving abilities. Rather a lovely collection you have there.
Dec 28, 2020 @ 20:39:49
Lol! They’re quite well trained by now and most of them have learned it’s sensible to follow the wishlists. But Mr. Kaggsy is pretty good at tracking down things I don’t have, which is amazing considering he has no idea what books I own (and frankly I often don’t have either….!!)
Dec 28, 2020 @ 23:01:21
Oooooh, I’ve been contemplating the Zola project too. Mel (at The Reading Life) has been tempting me for some time and I think he’s almost done now? Also, happy birthday. Mr. BIP has a near-Xmas birthday, too, and it seems to have taken the better part of a lifetime to balance out the childhood injustices of it all.
Dec 29, 2020 @ 16:31:46
So tempting to just launch into Zola and ignore anything else! And I can totally understand where Mr. BIP is coming from – I used to snarl because my brother with his June birthday could always have outside parties. Not sure I’m really over it….
Dec 29, 2020 @ 02:03:04
So basically, Mr. K helps to indulge your Russian Lit obsessions . . . which in turn means that I heartily approve of Mr. K! 😉
An excellent festive haul all around, though — enjoy! I look forward to the reviews!
Dec 29, 2020 @ 16:30:33
He certainly is an enabler, and for a man who prefers films to books he does very well! I was very spoiled this year! ;D
Dec 29, 2020 @ 13:59:05
Belated happy birthday from a fellow Christmas week birthday holder 🙂
Dec 29, 2020 @ 16:29:27
Thank you, and to you too. Not the best time of year for a birthday!
Jan 01, 2021 @ 15:12:28
Great haul! Wishing you many happy hours of reading to come, with these. 😊 Interestingly, I also received The Brothers Lionheart from a fellow reader some time back. 😁
Jan 01, 2021 @ 16:19:05
Thank you! Lots of loveliness to choose from. I’m quite intrigued by Lionheart – may try to get to it soon! 😀
Jan 10, 2021 @ 18:56:32
What a wonderful pile of presents! Happy birthday! I’m sorry for the belated congratulations. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! May you enjoy immensely all of your books, in good health and humor. ❤
Jan 10, 2021 @ 20:11:09
Thanks so much for the kind wishes, and I wish you a happy 2021 too – let’s hope it improves, and at least we have books to turn to!
Jan 22, 2021 @ 06:59:43
Jan 26, 2021 @ 18:48:15
This is the first year in many that I haven’t done a Books Received and Given post on Boxing Day, the main reason being that due to the year we’ve had some family members were not here, and were not going to receive their books for a couple of weeks via hand delivery by those who were here. That’s meant I couldn’t write about this books and spoil the surprise. I could have written just on books received, but that would have been a very short post as I only received one! My family knows my TBR only too well, so I frequently get very few books but this year must have been a record!
On the other hand, I reckon I gave away a stellar lot!
Jan 27, 2021 @ 13:52:05
Always good to give books! And it has been an odd year – all of mine came via post, but I’m glad they *did* arrive…
