Just a little reminder that in a week’s time, Simon at Stuck in a Book and I will be launching the #1944club! As with our previous reading weeks, we’ll be encouraging you all to read, explore, share and write about books from a particular years, and 1944 is the one in question.
Things kick off on Monday 15th October, and I have to confess that I’ve already started reading up in advance of the launch (I think Simon has too!) It’s an intriguing year, and I can’t wait to hear about what everyone’s reading. So do join in and share your #1944club reads – either here or at Simon’s blog. It should be great fun! π

I’m in! I’ve been on a prolonged blogging slump but I am determined to post next week π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 09:22:31
Soopah! Look forward to hearing about whatever you read! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 08:52:14
I’m sorry, I’ll have to pass on this: the only book I’ve got is Christina Stead’s For Love Alone and it’s 502 pages, and I’m just not in the mood for a chunkster right now.
Oct 08, 2018 @ 09:21:52
Not to worry – there will be another club in 6 months’ time! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 09:42:04
Thanks for the heads up, Karen. I’ve been looking forward to this challenge. I may not be able to read a great deal but I’ll definitely take part. Hope it’s as big a success as the 1977 Club!
Oct 08, 2018 @ 15:59:06
Anything is fine, even if it’s only one slim book! It’s the fun of taking part I enjoy! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 18:25:57
Thanks, Karen!
Oct 08, 2018 @ 19:23:06
No probs – glad you’ll be joining us! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 12:53:24
I am conflicted. I really want to join in with this, but I can’t decide if I can fit it in. I’m still reading slowly, and of course I have already done 1944 in my A Century of Books. Somewhere buried in my tbr I have a tiny hardback of Berlin Hotel which I really fancy reading. Having just read two non ACOB books in a row, I can’t work out if one more will completely derail me.
Oct 08, 2018 @ 15:58:02
Oooh, do try to squeeze Berlin Hotel in – I’d be keen to hear what it’s like! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 13:51:10
Well done for putting up the reminder! I totally forgot at the weekend, but I’ll put mine up soon π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 15:55:03
I forgot until last night, then realised that 15th October was closer than I thought….. π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 17:47:02
Yikes! That totally took me by surprise! I will have to look to see if I have already read something that counts or get reading!
Oct 08, 2018 @ 18:13:05
LOL! I know – it’s been 6 months since the last one, but it still creeps up on you! Hope you can join in!
Oct 08, 2018 @ 20:07:39
Yeah, it might be nice if someone could pop a reminder in about a month early. I found a couple of reviews I have already done that will apply, but I’ll have to scramble to read anything new for it.
Oct 08, 2018 @ 20:11:31
Lol. Yes, I suppose we should, although these events often creep up on us as well…. !
Oct 08, 2018 @ 18:33:29
I’m hoping to join in again as I have a couple I want to read. Blogging may be a problem though as I haven’t been in the mood for posting anything for quite a while. I’m interested to see what others choose anyway.
Oct 08, 2018 @ 19:22:48
Well, join in if you can, and if you feel like posting that would be great. If not, just leave a comment somewhere telling us about what you’ve read! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 19:50:21
Will do. These YEAR Clubs of yours often spur me into a posting frenzy! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 19:57:27
LOL! We’ll look forward to that, then! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 18:38:19
I’ll have to pass on this one as I don’t have anything suitable in my TBR right now. A pity, really, as it’s definitely my kind of era. I’m sure you’ll have plenty of fun. π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 19:21:52
Awww, shame! Next time, maybe! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 18:38:49
I was hoping to read one, but I choose too long of one for what life holds right at the moment. I’m searching for a shorter one.
Oct 08, 2018 @ 19:21:30
Alas, yes, longer books can be a problem if you’re trying to squeeze them into a reading challenge. Good luck hunting! π
Oct 09, 2018 @ 23:00:14
I picked The Robe since I own it, but got overwhelmed by East of Eden (tomorrow’s post) and haven’t done much reading for a few weeks.
Oct 10, 2018 @ 06:18:48
Sometimes we go through phases of struggling with reading – well I certainly do – hope the mojo returns!
Oct 10, 2018 @ 16:21:27
Thanks! It’ll happen. I do still listen to books daily.
Oct 10, 2018 @ 16:27:46
Excellent! :))))
Oct 08, 2018 @ 19:11:24
Hm, the book I’m currently reading claims to be first published in 1944 but Wikipedia says 1943, I should never have double-checked…
Oct 08, 2018 @ 19:20:49
Oh dear… It’s often confusing and the book is not always correct either, as I’ve found out with one I’ve chosen – fortunately, the mistake is in my favour.
Oct 08, 2018 @ 19:32:11
Yeah, and as 1943 editions are sold on Abebooks, I guess they do exist. Fortunately I didn’t buy it with the challenge in mind anyway, although it would have been a convenient coincident. It was just one of those gorgeous books that live in thrift stores, costs next to nothing, and just begs you to take them home and adopt them…
Oct 08, 2018 @ 19:34:49
Ah yes…. I’ve come across that kind of book frequently. In fact, my house is bulging at the seams with them! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 19:59:22
This sounds interesting, and one of my favourite eras… I’ll need to see what I have on the tbr shelves. Although I’ve been abysmal at posting anything for a while now.
Oct 08, 2018 @ 20:10:59
Ah well – maybe investigating 1944 will prove to have a galvanising effect! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 21:50:54
Had a rummage through my TBR and I actually do have one book published in 1944. It has been moved to the top of the pile so we will see.
Oct 09, 2018 @ 11:36:02
Fingers crossed! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 20:18:21
Looking forward to it! I got myself organised this time and have already started reading. I think this will be a great club – there were so many wonderful books published in 1944. π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 20:37:11
Hurrah! Look forward to hearing about your reading! π
Oct 08, 2018 @ 20:37:48
I don’t have anything from 1944 but will be reading all the posts. Hopefully next time!
Oct 08, 2018 @ 21:10:41
Do hope you can join in next time – who knows which year it will be!
Oct 08, 2018 @ 21:51:07
I just started a new reading project – A Century of Women – so this would be a great chance to fill in 1944. I haven’t picked a book yet, still waffling over several possibilities, including The Key by Patricia Wentworth, The Headmistress by Angela Thirkell, Sparkling Cyanide by Agatha Christie, Dragonwyck by Anya Seton, Green Dolphin Street by Elizabeth Goudge, Cluny Brown by Margery Sharp, or The Bachelor by Stella Gibbons.
Oct 09, 2018 @ 11:35:07
Excellent! There are some great books to choose from on that list, and the Christie is of course wonderful!

Oct 09, 2018 @ 00:11:04
I only have one book on my shelves published in 1944. If I get through my book club book this week I might have a go. Will see how I go. I have three days of photography workshops next week but might fit it in. If not I will enjoy what you post up with your blogger mates.
Oct 09, 2018 @ 11:33:52
Hope you can join in, but if not do follow along! π
Oct 12, 2018 @ 22:36:20
I sure will.
Oct 13, 2018 @ 07:33:50
ππ
Oct 09, 2018 @ 07:58:16
I can only find 3 potential titles on my shelves. Will do my best to read one of them. Been meaning to re-read Fair Stood the Wind for France by HE Bates for years, and I have Gigi by Colette and Nada by Carmen Laforet too.
Oct 09, 2018 @ 11:30:01
Hurray! I can confirm that the Colette is nice and short…. π
Oct 10, 2018 @ 21:40:25
It’s nice to know that it creeps up on you two as well! I have two good choices and read the first chapter of one of them this morning. I will, at least, post about my progress on Twitter, if I can’t manage to squeeze finishing it in with my Giller Prize list reading. Will try!
Oct 11, 2018 @ 07:12:11
Excellent! Even if you donβt finish during the week itβs always good to hear about what you read later on!
Oct 13, 2018 @ 09:47:14
You do this deliberately don’t you – pick a year which is completely absent from my bookshelves and so forcing me to go book shopping. π
Oct 13, 2018 @ 14:49:28
LOL! Honestly we don’t! Fortunately I had several books already that I could draw on. But I’m always happy to encourage others to acquire books…. π
Oct 14, 2018 @ 09:59:11
Ah so now the truth emerges – this is all about you clearing the backlog from your own shelves while encouraging all of us to stock up. Very devious of you π
