The alert amongst you who are also on Twitter might have picked up the fact that I agreed to co-host an episode of Simon at Stuck in a Book’s podcast ‘Tea or Books?’ (and I’m sure you all listen to it as well). This is a one-off while his usual co-host Rachel is unavailable, and I was a weeny bit nervous (but quite pleased to be asked, really, because it’s always lovely to natter about books!)
We chose subjects where our tastes intersect; so in the first half we talk about detective fiction vs crime fiction, getting into the knotty subject of genre. The second half is Beverley Nichols based – “The Sweet and Twenties” vs “Merry Hall” – and so you’ll have to listen to see what we make of these two Beverley books and which is our favourite! π
One thing I intended to mention in the podcast, but forgot in all the excitement, was the source of my copy of “The Sweet and Twenties”. I have a beautiful signed edition which was so kindly gifted to me by the lovely Liz at Adventures in reading, writing and working from home – such generosity, and I do treasure it so it was about time I had an excuse to actually read it – here it is:
So do go over and have a listen to Simon and I having a good chatter about books (and yes, I was drinking tea while we recorded….) Hopefully if nothing else we’ll convince you to give Beverley Nichols a try! π

It was wonderful to have you π

It was great fun – I really enjoyed it in the end! π

Great I have listen to that podcast a few times
Feb 19, 2018 @ 09:53:48
It’s a fun podcast and definitely worth listening to! π

I bought 4 Beverly Nichols hardcover books and they are waiting to be read.
Feb 19, 2018 @ 09:53:35
Oooh lovely – you have treats in store! :))))
Feb 18, 2018 @ 23:05:20
Fantastic, I will have to listen in to that. I do listen occasionally but don’t always remember/find time. I would be utterly hopeless at anything like that so well done.
Feb 19, 2018 @ 09:45:59
Thank you! I was a teeny bit nervous, but Simon is such an easy co-host to natter to! π

I listened last night, I loved it. Excellent conversation from both of you. I really must get to Beverley Nichols I have 2 tbr but now wondering if Down the Garden Path is the best one to start with.
Feb 19, 2018 @ 09:55:15
Aww thanks! π Yes, Beverley is just wonderful and tbh I don’t know that it matters where you start and Down the Garden Path is rather lovely! π
Feb 19, 2018 @ 12:43:03
I will listen to that asap ! How great it will be to actually hear your voice, instead of just reading you !
Feb 19, 2018 @ 13:12:04
π Hope you enjoy it! We did have a great discussion about crime and Beverley!
Feb 20, 2018 @ 13:41:16
A signed copy! Lovely! And now I’ll have to go back and read all your reviews of the BLCCs, I have several unread and don’t know which to read next.

Enjoyed listening. I thought the distinction between crime fiction and detective fiction was well explained – it accounts for the fact that I like ‘puzzle’ crimes which always remind me of cryptic crosswords. And you both sounded so enthusiastic about Beverley Nichols that I’ve been rootling around the shelves for the Garden Path one, which I thought I had and can’t find, but I did discover Down the Kitchen Sink, which I didn’t realise I had, so I shall read it forthwith!

Thank you. Yes, crime is *such* a wide genre – and I’m not a huge fan of restrictive genres. But I’ve definitely had enough of vile and violent crime against women. So glad you have a Beverley and I do hope you enjoy it! :))
Feb 21, 2018 @ 19:54:06
I’ve just bought Uncle Samson by Beverley Nichols which might be interesting but I doubt if I’ll enjoy it as much as his ‘garden’ books.
Feb 21, 2018 @ 20:24:07
Perhaps not, although he’s one of those authors I tend to find entertaining whatever he’s writing about. Happy reading! π
Feb 26, 2018 @ 09:40:57
I was so glad to find a good home for this although rather wish I’d read it myself first!!!
Feb 26, 2018 @ 15:49:57
Itβs very much appreciated!
Feb 26, 2018 @ 22:15:09
Karen, I have bookmarked the site! I listened to the first five minutes and you sound very good. I don’t listen to podcasts much, but I want to hear you on classic crime, so shall go back for that.
Feb 27, 2018 @ 09:01:35
Thank you! I hope you enjoy it. An hour’s commitment is a lot to ask of people, maybe, but we had such fun recording it, it didn’t seem that long! π
