Just a quick heads up that I have another review over on Shiny New Books today! This time I’ve been making the acquaintance of the great American humorist, James Thurber.
Thurber is probably best known for his story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, which was a hugely successful film with Danny Kaye (I *love* Danny Kaye!).
However, the book, which has been released in a shiny new edition with a striking cover by Penguin Modern Classics, turns out to be quite a different kettle of fish – pop over to Shiny, and have a look at my review, which is here!

I have loved Thurber ever since we studied Walter Mitty in high school back in 1960’s. I have many of his books and began collecting him for his dog illustrations. I have a dog collection of books from 1900 to 1950’s, mainly for their illustrations. I used to have a good friend that reminded me very much of Walter Mitty. It was quite comical really. Read your review at Shiny Books. The more recent movie of Walter Mitty (a couple of years ago? wasn’t nearly as good as sitting down to just read the story.)

The drawings are lovely, and I wish there’d been more in this book. I think I’ll definitely stick to the stories rather than the film adaptations – as I’ve said before, I’m a great believer that the book is always better!
